Dental Hygiene Month: Ergonomic Essentials for Hygienists

October is National Dental Hygiene Month (wahooooo)!
While we spend a lot of time celebrating the profession, I think it’s also the perfect reminder to celebrate—and take care of—the body that allows you to do this work every day. Let this be your guide for your top ergo must-haves👇
Dental hygiene is physically demanding. The repetitive movements, awkward patient positioning, pinch force, reaching, twisting, and long hours in static postures can add up over a career (I know they have with me)!
The good news? Sometimes small changes (like, so small), to your setup and equipment can make a BIG difference.
That’s why I’m celebrating Dental Hygiene Month with special savings all October long in the Polished Posture® shop.
Save $15 on $100+, $25 on $200+, or $40 on $300+, plus additional savings on select products.
Here are a few of my ergonomic favorites:
1. Make Patient Positioning Work for YOU
If you’re constantly bending, hunching, reaching, or twisting to access your patient, your body is doing work it shouldn’t have to do.
Patient positioning cushions help support the head, neck, back, or knees so patients can comfortably recline while allowing you to bring the oral cavity closer to your ideal working position. If you constantly have patients tell you, "I can't lean back," this is for you!
Better patient positioning = less bending, reaching, and compromising your own posture.
2. Upgrade the Tool You Use the Most
Think about how much time you spend holding your dental mirror.
A lightweight, wide-handled ergonomic mirror can help reduce excessive pinch force while improving visibility. It’s one of the simplest ergonomic upgrades you can make—and one you’ll use with nearly every patient. I promise, once you go WIDE, you'll never go back to those skinny mirrors again.
3. Stop Holding the Suction Yourself
If you’re trying to hold the suction while scaling, polishing, or using your power instruments, your shoulder, wrist, and hand may be paying the price.
Hands-free suction devices can eliminate an entire task from your working hand while improving visibility and helping you maintain a more neutral working position.
4. Cut the Cord When You Polish
Cordless polishers eliminate the pulling and resistance of a traditional cord, giving your hand and wrist more freedom while you work. I had NO IDEA how hard that heavy cord pulls against you until it's not there anymore.
For Dental Hygiene Month, cordless polishers are $200 off, making October a great time to finally make the switch.

5. Don't Forget the Little Things
Ergonomics isn’t just about stools and loupes. Small changes throughout your day matter, too.
You’ll also find mirror protection and accessories, operatory stretch guides, anti-slip headbands, stickers, Real Hygienist pins, cordless polisher accessories, and more in the shop.
Celebrate Your Career by Protecting Your Body
We spend Dental Hygiene Month recognizing the incredible work hygienists do for their patients.
But I also want it to be a reminder that your health matters, too.
The goal isn’t just to get through another day of patients. It’s to build a career you can enjoy for years to come—with less pain, less fatigue, and fewer unnecessary physical demands.
Dental Hygiene Month savings are available throughout October while supplies last.
Save $15 off $100+, $25 off $200+, or $40 off $300+, plus take advantage of special product discounts throughout the shop.
Discounts cannot be combined.
