Stop Holding the Suction: The Ergonomic Upgrade Every Dental Professional Should Make

🎥 Before you read: I put together a complete video tutorial demonstrating exactly how I use my three favorite hands-free suction devices 👇
You'll see how each device is placed with a patient and why I believe hands-free suction is one of the easiest ergonomic upgrades you can make in dentistry.
Watch the video first, then keep reading for the "why" behind it 👇
If you're still holding the HVE or saliva ejector every time you use your power scaler, polisher, handpiece, or place sealants, you're not alone. I was taught that way too.
But just because it's common doesn't mean it's the best approach.
Holding the suction throughout a procedure forces one hand into a static position while the other performs repetitive movements. Over time, that extra grip force and awkward positioning can contribute to many of the musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) we see every day in dentistry, especially in the wrist, shoulder, neck, and upper back.
It also creates another problem: visibility.
Think about trying to scale the distal-lingual of 14 while holding the suction. If you can't use your mirror effectively, what usually happens?
We end up upside down, leaning toward the patient, twisting our neck, and "chicken winging" our arm just to see.
There is a better way.
Hands-free suction devices let you simply plug them in and get to work. Your patient stays dry and comfortable while both of your hands are free to do what they do best. That means better mirror use, better visibility, and dramatically better posture.
My Favorite Hands-Free Suction Options from Zirc
Each of these devices is simple to learn, comfortable for patients, and requires very little adjustment to your normal workflow.

A soft, comfortable option that provides reliable hands-free suction while keeping the treatment area dry. It's a great everyday solution that allows you to focus on instrumentation instead of chasing saliva.

This is the all-in-one powerhouse. It combines:
High-volume evacuation
Tongue retraction
Cheek retraction
Built-in throat protection
For many procedures, it essentially becomes an extra set of hands, making it one of my favorite ergonomic tools in the operatory.

Perfect when you need a smaller profile while still maintaining excellent moisture control. It's comfortable, effective, and works well for many restorative and hygiene procedures.

One feature that's often overlooked is the tubing itself.
Traditional HVE tubing is surprisingly heavy. Every time you move it, you're managing unnecessary weight that adds strain to your wrist, shoulder, and arm throughout the day.
The lightweight tubing included in Zirc's
Comfort Kit significantly reduces that load, making every procedure feel easier while helping decrease cumulative physical stress over the course of your career.
Small Changes Lead to Longer Careers
Dentistry is already physically demanding. Whenever we can eliminate unnecessary gripping, awkward postures, and static muscle loading, we're investing in our longevity.
Hands-free suction isn't difficult to learn—in fact, the learning curve is surprisingly small—but the ergonomic payoff can be huge.
Sometimes the biggest ergonomic improvements come from simply letting go of the suction.
