Polishing Smarter, Not Harder: 7 Tips That Made Me Actually Enjoy Polishing

If polishing is your least favorite part of the appointment, you're not alone—I used to dread it too.
Between the splatter, awkward positioning, and constantly refilling the prophy cup, it always felt more chaotic than it needed to be.
But over the years, I made a few simple changes that completely transformed how I polish. It's now faster, cleaner, more ergonomic, and honestly... a lot less frustrating.
🎥 Before you dive in, watch my quick video below where I demonstrate these tips in action!
1. Fill the Prophy Cup Completely
One of the easiest efficiency hacks is simply filling your prophy cup all the way.
Not only will you spend less time constantly adding paste, but a full cup also helps reduce splatter. Less paste flying around means a cleaner operator, cleaner patient, and cleaner room.
2. Ease Up on the Pedal
You don't need to floor the foot pedal like you're driving a race car.
Running your polisher at maximum speed creates unnecessary splatter and friction. That extra heat can also become uncomfortable for your patient.
A controlled speed gives you better control, a smoother polish, and a much better patient experience.
3. Wrap the Cup Around the Tooth
Instead of simply tapping each tooth, intentionally adapt the prophy cup around every surface.
This allows the cup to flex into the contours of the tooth and even flare slightly subgingivally to disrupt biofilm. If you polish before scaling (more on that in a moment), this can help remove loose plaque and make instrumentation easier.
Be intentional—your polishing should actually accomplish something.
4. Go Cordless
I never realized how much the cord on a traditional polisher affected my posture until I switched to cordless.
Removing that constant pull decreases fatigue, pinch force, and allows much smoother movements around the mouth.
I especially love cordless polishers with push-button activation and a foot pedal. When you're standing (more on that below), you don't have to hunt for the foot pedal or shift your weight, making it easier to stay balanced and maintain neutral posture.

5. Stand More Often
I'm a huge believer in a 50/50 approach—spend about half your day sitting and half standing whenever your procedures allow.
Standing while working can:
Improve circulation and blood flow
Reduce prolonged static sitting
Improve visibility
Help you position yourself more neutrally around the patient
6. Consider Polishing First
This might be my most controversial recommendation.
Polishing first removes loose plaque and superficial stain, giving you a cleaner surface to assess during instrumentation. I often find the rest of the appointment flows more efficiently because I'm not working through as much debris.
There are differing opinions on polishing before scaling, and every clinician should use their professional judgment based on the patient's needs. But after trying it myself, it's become part of my workflow—and many clinicians who have tested it report similar efficiency benefits.
7. Work From Behind Whenever Possible
Research consistently shows clinicians maintain their most neutral posture when working from approximately the 11 to 1 o'clock position.
Instead of constantly moving around the patient when polishing, I've learned how to access nearly every surface while staying behind them. This has dramatically reduced twisting and awkward reaching throughout polishing.
🎥 I have a full tutorial demonstrating exactly how I polish every surface from behind inside my FREE Posture Mini-Course. If you'd like to learn the technique step-by-step, you can access it there.
Small Changes Add Up
None of these tips are revolutionary on their own.
But together, they've made polishing faster, cleaner, more ergonomic, and much more enjoyable—for both me and my patients.
If polishing has always felt like the messy part of your appointment, try implementing just one or two of these ideas during your next clinical day. You might be surprised how much of a difference they make.
